Library and Information Centre

 

Introduction:

 

Library and Information Centre was established in the year 1960.  It is special Library which mainly consists of Electrical and Power Engineering related documents.  The Institute has a modern Library with more than sixty-five thousand documents consisting of Technical books, reports, standards, CD-ROMS, Audio Visual Educational Cassettes and back volumes of journals. The library subscribes to IEEE Explore Digital Library, CIGRE membership, BIS standards yearly subscription and other International and Indian Journals.

Library consists of Windows and Ubuntu Computer systems with internet connection. Wi-Fi facility has been provided for laptop users. CCTV Web cameras have been fixed in the Library and the entire building is under camera surveillance.

To provide comprehensive collection of resources and services in support of Research, testing activities and learning needs of the Institute community.

 

Mission:

The main objective is to make the Library most effective Learning Resource centre to contribute to the quality of research and testing.

 

Library Infrastructure:

 

The Library and Information Centre has got a collection of over sixty-five thousand documents stock, comprising of books, periodicals, back volumes, reports, standards-both Indian & International, technical papers, photocopies and reprints. Presently the Library and Information Centre occupies ground and first floor of the building situated at the centre of the campus near Corporate building. The floor area is 720.10 square meters.

Library and Information Centre has WINDOWS and Ubuntu computer systems with Internet facility.  Library uses KOHA Library Management System for all its Library in-house operations.

 

Membership

 

  • Library membership is open to employees of the Institute and Research Scholars They can apply for membership in the prescribed format (download Membership Application)
  • Whenever a member leaves/retires he/she has to obtain a "No Dues Certificate" from the library.

CPRI has Institutional Membership of the following Libraries:

 

  • IISC Library
  • NAL library
  • IIM Library

 

Institutional Members:

 

  • Corporate/Industrial and Research Organizations can become Institutional member by paying the annual subscription fees.
  • Institutional Members are permitted to refer library print resources and avail photocopy facilities.

 

Visitors:

Clients and research scholars of other colleges/universities/organizations are also permitted to refer library resources on request from the division, for short periods.

The cards are not transferable. In the event of loss of a Reader Card, a duplicate card will be issued on payment of Rs. 50/- (Rupees fifty) after a lapse of 30 days from the date of reporting the loss in writing to the library.

The duplicate card will be issued only on the understanding that the borrower will be responsible for any loss arising out of the loss of the original card.

 

Circulation Rules:

  • All books except reference books will normally be issued from library, for one month. Reference books will be issued overnight only; bound volumes for one week and loose issues of periodicals for one week. Certain publications categorized as 'Not for Issue', will not be issued at all. They can be referred only in the library.
  • Handbooks, Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias will NOT be issued on loan.
  • Books/Journals borrowed on the cards should be returned on or before the due date stamped on due date slip.
  • Books are required to be presented physically at the library for renewal. Books will be renewed only if there are no other reservations.
  • Over-due books will not be renewed.
  • A fine of Rs. 5/- per day will levied after the due date.
  • If books are not returned or renewed even after two reminders and a final notice, the cost of book will be recovered from the pay bill of the defaulting borrower, or action initiated to replace the copy by purchasing a new one and the cost recovered from the defaulter. If the book/publication is out of print, the total cost of the same plus one hundred percent or at the rate as decided by the competent authority will be recovered from the borrower.
  • No publication shall be taken out from the library and Information Centre by any person unless he gives a card to the counter in exchange for the publication.
  • Books, Periodicals and any other material that have been taken out of the library are liable to be recalled at any time and when so recalled, must be returned at once.
  • Every reader must return all books in his/her possession to the library for stock verification.
  • A "No-Due" certificate issued by the library and Information Centre should be obtained and produced to the administration before a person leaves the institute on long leave, transfer or resignation etc.

 

ACQUISITION OF BOOKS/PUBLICATIONS:

 

  • Members recommending books for procurement to library may do so by indenting such books in the indent form available in the library. The indents may be sent to the Library and Information Centre through Head of the division concerned.
  • Books received on approval and kept on display may also be inspected and recommended for purchase by raising indents.
  •  Approval books will NOT be issued on loan or allowed to be taken out of the library and Information Centre.
  • New books/publications shall not normally be issued while they are on display in the Library and Information Centre.

 

GENERAL RULES:

 

  • Before entering the library, readers are requested to deposit their belongings at the counter; and sign in the register kept for that purpose.
  • Before leaving the library, readers should leave the books/journals on the table itself. They need NOT replace the books on the shelves.
  • Smoking, loud conversation and similar objectionable practices are not allowed in or around the Library and Information Centre premises.
  • Readers are requested not to write and mark upon or otherwise damage any book, periodical or any other material belonging to the library.
  • Readers are responsible for any damage or injury done by them to the books or other property and if so damaged or injured they are liable to pay the full value thereof or as determined by the Senior Librarian or the officer-in-charge or by the Director, C.R.T.L.
  • The library staff at the counter are authorised to examine everything that passes into or out of the Library and Information Centre.
  • The Director General, CPRI will have the power to suspend the use of the cards by any reader or deny the use of the library to any reader found neglecting to comply with any of these rules.
  • Notwithstanding anything contained in these rules, the Library Advisory Committee and the Director General, C.P.R.I. will have powers to cancel in full or in part or to modify suitably any or all the rules herein mentioned.

    • Information regarding the Library holdings and the format (print, CD / DVDs) - Books, Journals & Back Issues, Theses/Dissertation/Project reports, and other information) can be searched through OPAC
    • Indicates the status of book - available, when on issue, not for circulation, damaged etc.
    • Library enrolled Users can view their account in OPAC. 
    • Login: Employee Library ID and Password (which can be changed/reset by the user).  
    • Users can view the list of books borrowed by them and their overdue status, if any.

Library Information centre has automated its in-house operations such as acquisition, circulation, cataloguing etc through KOHA Library Management System open source software.  Library also has Knowledge Management System portal repository for archiving standards and other digital documents.

The library also has Web Online Public Access Catalog (Web OPAC) Searching Area for the resources present in Library, Internet browsing area for accessing e-resources, Laptop zone with Wi-Fi facility.
