Liquid Dielectrics find extensive application in electrical equipment. Among the liquid dielectrics used in power equipment, mineral oils are most important. Mineral oil originates from petroleum crude and is used as coolant and insulating media by filling the inner space in power transformers and switchgears.
Liquid Dielectric suffers electrical and thermal stresses while a transformer is in operation resulting in degradation of its properties. Hence the liquid is periodically analyzed to ascertain its suitability to use. During arcing or flashover etc. inside a transformer, hydrocarbon gases are generated. Analysis of these gases provides useful information on the nature of fault. The concentration of furanic compounds present in oil plays important role in predicting status of solid insulation of the transformer. The life of transformer may be enhanced remarkably by systematic monitoring of transformer oil.
